In recent years, there have been a lot of anti-Chinese pogroms against Chinese people or people who are perceived to be Chinese. It's no different from how, following 9/11, very few immigrants from the Arab world would discuss how Saddam Hussein was more democratic than the US occupying forces, because even though he was a dictator, at least people could sleep at night without getting their doors kicked in, or getting killed in a free-fire zone.
But if you asked mainland Iraqis about this, which I did, then they would gladly tell you. I recall one person whose biggest complaint was how Saddam would be on every TV channel, contrast and compare that to the mass rapes conducted by US marines in Baghdad.
So it's a survival technique. I'm an immigrant myself, and I have learned the hard way how violent and indoctrinated people in the west can be if you do not offer them bias confirmation.
As for elitism: What do you think you're doing right now? All empirical evidence points to how China has a democracy, but because it is not a British western democracy, you're still referring to it as a one party system, even though it has 8 ruling parties in the world's biggest parliament.
How is this any different from the British Raj sneering at the "beastly Hindu" or the fascists that you're so concerned about, sneering at the "savage Bolshevik?"
Moreover, I do agree with you on how communism and fascism can be found in the same place, because the liberals are very eager collaborators. The moment fascism arrives in a country, the liberals are the first to offer financial and institutional support.
During Hitler's rise to power, Weimar Germany handed over everything from its key industries, all the way to its police, in an effort to aid the fascists, and at this point in time they were social democrats.
During Mussolini's rise to power, the Carabineris and the industrialists would bend over backwards to accommodate the fascists, even the British liberal press would print headlines such as "Hurrah for the blackshirts!"
Franco got plenty of support from NATO, and then during WW2, the democratic nations, as you call them, were happy to join with Hitler into the Munich agreement, which lead to a brutal genocide that took some 30 million lives in the Warsaw Pact nations.
The reason why fascism exists is because of how it is the armed wing of liberal democracy. Liberals love democracy until the day that it disenfranchises the rich, going back as far as Julius Caesar forgiving people's rents to end poverty, and finding himself cut down by the land barons of the Roman senate.
And then Caesar Augustus shows up and employs death squads to kill every equine who was sympathetic to the popularaes.
So the US doesn't need a fascist bend. They have strikerbreakers, militiamen, pinkertons and the KKK for that sort of thing. They have the John Birch Society, the Blue Lives Matter campaign, the Silver Legion, the Gusanos. Why would the United States need fascism? Mussolini's basis of fascism was drawn up from America's booming industry of strikebreaking. It was Europe's introduction to the Pinkerton system.
Fascism would be completely redundant in the US, because the US has something far worse. It has settler-colonialism. The nation was founded by mercenary viceroys where soldiers would behead native children for fun. Where entire races of people were literally raped out of existence. The Ku Klux Klan have carried out mutilations, burnings and hangings that would even make an SS officer blush.
And thank God for Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, Ho Chi Minh, Xi Jingping, Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, and the millions of working class people around the world who politely begged to differ with this world order. Because if it wasn't for them, you'd be living in a world of Swastikas, fiefdoms, chattel slavery and nuclear warfare.
